North Johns (incorporated in 1912), often called Johns along with the smaller settlement of Johns just to the south, is a small town of 143 on 0.20 square miles in southwestern Jefferson County, west of Bessemer. The community was founded as a coal mining settlement and named for Welsh mining engineer Llewelyn Johns, who worked for the DeBardeleben Coal Company. A post office (35006) was established at Johns in 1889 and closed in 1973. The population peaked at about 2,000 residents during the mine's boom years, but rapidly dwindled after the mine, shut in the 1940s, then reopened by the Black Diamond Coal Company, closed for good in the 1950s.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 145 people residing in the town's 64 housing units, for an average household of 2.3 persons. The population density was 713.0/mi², with housing units at an average density of 314.7/mi². The racial makeup of the town was 49.7% White and 46.2% African American.

In 2000, there were 51 households, of which 29.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.1% were married couples living together, 17.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.5% were non-families. 21.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 2.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.26.

In the town the population was spread out with 23.2% under the age of 18, 11.3% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 23.9% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $23,750, and the median income for a family was $33,750. Males had a median income of $35,375 versus $7,083 for females. The per capita income for the town was $8,149. There were 23.1% of families and 31.2% of the population living below the poverty line, including 47.6% of under eighteens and 60.7% of those over 64.

The Jefferson County Board of Equalization evaluated 58 homes in North Johns and determined that their average market value for 2007 was $29,029, a 0.1% decrease since 2006.
