Sylvan Springs (incorporated in 1957) is a town of 1,542 on 8.69 square miles in western Jefferson County, northwest of Pleasant Grove. The current mayor is Stevan Parsons, with Tammy Bousack, Dennis Brand, Rickey Jones, Larry Smith and Mike Thompson serving on the town council.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,542 people residing in the town's 650 housing units, for an average household of 2.37 persons. The population density was 177.5/mi², with housing units at an average density of 74.8/mi². The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White and 1.36% African American. 0.52% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.

In 2000, there were 589 households, of which 26.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.6% were married couples living together, 7.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.7% were non-families. 19.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 2.85.

In the town the population was spread out with 18.0% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 26.6% from 25 to 44, 28.6% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 93.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $42,692, and the median income for a family was $49,853. Males had a median income of $37,500 versus $23,350 for females. The per capita income for the town was $20,338. About 3.9% of families and 4.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.0% of those under age 18 and 7.8% of those age 65 or over.

The Jefferson County Board of Equalization evaluated 586 homes in Sylvan Springs and determined that their average market value for 2007 was $117,997, a 0.9% decrease since 2006.
