Tinsley Randolph Harrison (born March 18, 1900; died August 4, 1978) was a physician, teacher, and author. He spent most of his career at the UAB School of Medicine and specialized in cardiology and the pathophysiology of heart disease.
The Tinsley Harrison Research Tower in the UAB Medical Center at UAB is named in his honor. Additionally, the current Internal Medicine Residency at UAB is named after Harrison.
His protege, Dr. James Pittman, completed a book about Harrison in 2014, Tinsley Harrison, M.D.: Teacher of Medicine.
History
- August 1, 1950: Dr. Tinsley Harrison became acting dean of the Medical College of Alabama and chair of the Department of Medicine.
- October 24, 1964: Drs. Tinsley Harrison and Champ Lyons were named Distinguished Professors by The University of Alabama Board of Trustees, the first such designations given to a member of the Alabama faculty.
- In 1972, he was inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor.
- September 23, 1984: The Tinsley Harrison Tower was dedicated.
- In 1998, he was inducted into the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame.
- In 2014, NewSouth Books released Tinsley Harrison, M.D.: Teacher of Medicine, a biography of Harrison that included interviews with Harrison, his family, and fellow doctors, written by his colleague and mentee James Pittman.
