Trafford (incorporated in 1948) is a town of 640 on 2.44 square miles in northern Jefferson County, between Warrior and County Line. The community was originally known as Union City, but changed after the construction of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad to avoid confusion with another depot on the line. The new name honored local land owner C. R. Trafford. The Trafford Post Office, now discontinued, was established in 1915.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 646 people residing in the town's 308 housing units, for an average household of 2.1 persons. The population density was 264.9/mi², with housing units at an average density of 126.3/mi². The racial makeup of the town was 92.7% White and 6.19% African American. 0.93% of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race.

In 2000, there were 220 households out of which 25.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.7% were married couples living together, 15.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.7% were non-families. 25.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.82.

In the town the population was spread out with 20.7% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 26.8% from 45 to 64, and 14.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $23,611, and the median income for a family was $32,292. Males had a median income of $29,375 versus $18,750 for females. The per capita income for the town was $11,926. About 17.0% of families and 21.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 34.9% of those under age 18 and 22.0% of those age 65 or over.

The Jefferson County Board of Equalization evaluated 195 homes in Trafford and determined that their average market value for 2007 was $60,182, a 2.8% increase since 2006.
