The Birmingham Female Institute was opened on September 1, 1879 by the trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

J. W. Christian, pastor of First Methodist Church served as president and principal, with assistance from Annie Green, formerly associated with Professor Robertson, as "instructress".

The school offered instruction for grades one to three at rates ranging from $2.00 to $3.00 per term.
