Southern Baptist

  • Does it make sense for Southern Baptist churches to be a subcategory of this category? --Dystopos (talk) 10:28, 8 December 2023 (CST)
    • That is a good question. It raises some difficulties because some African American churches, such as Sixth Avenue are duly affiliated. They cooperate with both the National Baptist Convention (and its Alabama affliate, the Alabama Missionary Baptist State Convention) and the Southern Baptist Convention (and its Alabama affiliate the Alabama Baptist State Convention. Also some long-time Southern Baptist churches such as Southside Baptist are no longer affiliated with the SBC. Your question prompted me to do something I've thought about for a while: import the List of Churches in the Birmingham Metro Baptist Association. I would not want churches like Sixth Avenue to be listed in the SBC sub category and not in the category with all the other Black Baptist churches. Given Birmingham's realities, the best way to divide the Baptist churches might be those founded by African Americans and those founded by Whites. Then there would also be some that are Hispanic and some that are Vietnamese etc. David Bains (talk) 06:51, 9 December 2023 (CST)
      • I hesitate to use our little categorization system to add any reinforcement to our informal racial divisions. Just to use a recently-looked-at example, NorthPark claims that, "In a culture divided by race, we seek to tear down walls of discrimination." (though their staff roster and move to Trussville suggest they're doing it wrong). For that reason, I would rather go by formal affiliation (either to the national or state organizations), even if some are categorized as affiliated with more than one organization. And I wouldn't mind seeing a "Former Southern Baptist churches" category for those no longer maintaining their affiliation. But I only want to pursue it if its actually illuminating. --Dystopos (talk) 10:02, 9 December 2023 (CST)
        • Understood. These days the messiness of resisting categorization is part of the life of a lot of Baptist churches. And I have a friend in another state whose church is definitely no longer Southern Baptist, but he has not been able to get the SBC to remove his congregation from their online congregation finder. I don't think developing the subcategory is a priority right now. David Bains (talk) 13:21, 9 December 2023 (CST)
          • 10-4. I have noticed churches being more cagey about their denominational affiliations. --Dystopos (talk) 21:52, 9 December 2023 (CST)
