Catherine Greene Browne

Catherine Greene Browne (born September 20, 1939; died September 9, 2021 in Jackson's Gap, Tallapoosa County) was a gardener, preservationist and historian.

Catherine was the daughter of Lovick Edward Greene and the former Catherine Donnelly. She grew up in Forest Park with four siblings. She attended Huntingdon College in Montgomery, and married Charles Brown in 1960. She later completed a degree at UAB.

Browne was an active member of the Forest Park Garden Club and Cliffside Garden Club. She was a leader in efforts to document the Forest Park Historic District and to preserve the Avondale Villa and to renovate the Avondale Park. She served for 11 years as president of the Friends of Avondale Park.

Browne was also a historian, the author of books on the history of Forest Park and of Avondale, as well as numerous articles on local history. She also led tours in various Birmingham neighborhoods and was a member of the Jefferson County Historical Commission and a charter member of the Birmingham Historical Commission.

Browne also supported music through her membership in the Birmingham Music Club and the Music Guild. In later life, the Brownes moved to a home on Lake Martin in Tallapoosa County. She died in 2021.
