Eric Lathan

Eric Dwayne Lathan (born October 27, 1976) is a security guard for the Birmingham Park and Recreation Board and Vinson Guard, a former member of the U. S. Army, and one of 14 candidates to qualify for a special election to fill the Jefferson County Commission District 1 seat left vacant when William Bell became Mayor of Birmingham.

Lathan attended Epic Elementary School, L. M. Smith Middle School and Huffman High School. He has also taken classes at Virginia College of Birmingham, Jefferson State Community College and UAB. He worked summer jobs for Birmingham Coca-Cola and Food World before becoming a security officer for Wells Fargo Security in 1996.

In 1998 Lathan joined the U. S. Army and saw duty in South Korea and Bosnia. He was deactivated in June 2001, but remained in the Reserves serving in Iraq as a chemical specialist. He left in 2007 with the rank of E-5 Sergeant. Since then he has worked with Vinson Guard Services and with the Birmingham Park Board.
