Shelby County

1. July 25: John Burleson was one of two people shot to death during a robbery at John's 280 Pawn Shop in Westover. LaSamuel Gamble and Marcus Presley were arrested and charged with murder. The shooter, Presley, was 16 at the time of the incident. He was initially sentenced to death, but was removed from death row following a Supreme Court ruling in 2006. Gamble also had his death sentence reduced to life without parole after Judge Michael Joiner found that he had ineffective counsel during sentencing. (report)

Talladega County

• August 9: Dixie Gaither, 72, and her son were beaten to death during a robbery. William "Corky" Snyder stole a gun and later shot her son's girlfriend with it. He was convicted of three counts of captial murder in 1996 and sentenced to death. His conviction was reversed by the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals, but reinstated by the Alabama Supreme Court. Snyder killed himself in his cell at the Holman Correctional Facility in Atmore in July 2011. (report)

1. October 13: Joseph Todd Jowers, 32, was shot to death outside Classic's Lounge on 37th Street East in Tuscaloosa. No arrest. (report)
