Michael Flowers

Michael Flowers (born November 12, 1956 in North Little Rock, Arkansas) was a professor of theatre arts at Birmingham-Southern College for 37 years, and chair of the at Department of Theatre until his retirement in 2021.

Flowers graduated from North Little Rock Northeast High School and enrolled at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro to study sports journalism. He became interested in theater there and earned his bachelor of fine arts in 1979. He went on to complete a master of fine arts at the University of Mississippi in Oxford in 1982. While in college, Flowers performed with summer stock companies. After graduating he worked as a contract instructor before joining Birmingham-Southern's theatre faculty in 1984.

While in Birmingham, Flowers has performed with Summerfest, which became the Red Mountain Theatre Company, and has also directed several of its productions and served as the organization's executive director.

As a teacher and stage director he was known for sharing his interest in the work of Stephen Sondheim. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education jointly recognized Flowers as "Alabama Professor of the Year" in 2015.

Flowers is married to the former Pat Anderson of Fayetteville, Arkansas. The couple have two children, Sarah and Solomon.
