The Bessemer City Council is the legislative body for the city of Bessemer, with offices in Bessemer City Hall. The body meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month at 10:00 AM, and on the fourth Tuesday at 7:00 PM. Myra Armstead is the Council Secretary. Councilors are elected for four-year terms.
2006-2010 Council
The current council representatives, as of October 1, 2006, are:
- District 1: Dorothy Davidson, council president
- District 2: Louise Alexander
- District 3: Sara W. Belcher president pro-tem
- District 4: James Stephens
- District 5: Albert Soles
- District 6: Jesse Matthews
- District 7: Earl Cochran
2002-2006 Council
- District 1: Dorothy Davidson
- District 2: Louise Alexander
- District 3: Sara W. Belcher
- District 4: Betty Woods
- District 5: Olivia P. Walker
- District 6: Jesse Matthews
- District 7: LaBrenda Belle Marshall
All seven council members faced elections on August 22, 2006. Incumbents Davidson, Alexander, Belcher, and Matthews were re-elected. Dock Sott challenged Matthews. Woods, Walker and Marshall ran for re-election, but were defeated by challengers. A runoff on September 12, 2006 pitted Alexander against challenger Clinton Harris, Sr, Cochran against Marshall, and Soles against fellow challenger Margie Varner.
