The Gardendale Fire & Rescue Service serves the City of Gardendale by responding to fires and medical and hazardous materials emergencies over a 50 square-mile area. It is currently the only full-time fire department operating in North Jefferson County. The department was chartered in 1956 with 13 volunteer firemen.
The city's fire marshall is Jason Murrell and the department's chief is Clint Doss, who oversees 18 full-time employees. Doss was hired in 1992 as the city's first full-time chief. The department was transitioned to a full time fire and paramedic department in 2003.
