John Murdoch Harbert III (born July 19, 1921 died 1995 in Birmingham) was the founder of Harbert International, a Birmingham-based private company with $4 billion in assets as of 2006.

Born in Greenville, Mississippi to John M. Harbert, Jr and Mae Schooling HarbertHarbert served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He received a degree in civil engineering from Auburn University in 1946. In 1949, he founded the Harbert Corporation. The company and its subsidiaries engaged in mining, pipeline development, land development, limestone quarrying, building and road construction, and other operations around the world.

Harbert was married to the former Marguerite Jones. The couple had three children, John M. Harbert IV, Raymond, and Marguerite.


Harbert was a noted philanthropist, with numerous contributions to projects in Alabama, particularly to Auburn and to Birmingham-Southern College, where a building bears his wife's name. A lengthy section of Interstate 459 is named for Harbert.
