2001 Jim Walter No. 5 Mine explosion

The 2001 Jim Walter No. 5 Mine explosion was an explosion that happened at approximately 5:15 p.m. on September 23, 2001, at the Jim Walter Resources No. 5 Mine in Brookwood. Thirteen miners were killed when a cave-in in the longwall coal mine caused a release of methane gas that sparked two major explosions.
