South Central Bell was formed in July [[1968]] as a split from Southern Bell, providing telephone service to Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. It was one of the seven regional Bell operating companies split off from AT&T by order of the U.S. Department of Justice on [[January 1]], [[1984]]. It merged with Southern Bell in [[1992]] to form BellSouth, with many corporate functions consolidated in Atlanta by [[1995]]. The combined company was re-acquired by AT&T on [[December 29]], [[2006]].
