The Bessemer veterans memorial was a stone monument erected in the median of the Bessemer Super Highway near the Midfield city limit by the American Legion Auxiliary on July 20, 1940. The 6-foot tall stone marker originally recognized veterans of World War I, but soon after World War II a plaque was added to recognize all veterans. Another plaque, specifically honoring veterans of the Korean and Vietnam Wars, was added later.
The memorial was heavily damaged by an automobile accident in 2008 and subsequently removed by the Alabama Department of Transportation, which now discourages the placement of barricades in highway medians.
