The Birmingham Grotto of the National Speleological Society is an organization of cavers which meets monthly at the Homewood Library. As a group, the Grotto promotes the safe exploration, study and conservation of natural caverns in the region. The group was founded by Walter Anderton and chartered by the National Speleological Society on May 7, 1958.

From 1960 to 1961 the group published Cavea Novea, a monthly newsletter that was succeeded by the quarterly Confederate Caver in 1963. That publication produced only two issues. The current Birmingham Grotto News began appearing in 1970.

Birmingham Grotto has hosted the NSS Southeastern Regional Association's "Cave Carnival" in 1961, 1976, 1981, 1985, 1996 and 2005 as well as the NSS Board of Governor's meeting in 2004.
