The Birmingham Urban Mural is a large-scale mosaic covering the east wall of Boutwell Auditorium above the Fountain Walk. The mural, which was commissioned by the city, is made up of 28,000 individual tiles made from local clay and sculpted by participants in Space One Eleven's City Center Art program. The tiles are embedded in concrete panels that are mounted onto a steel frame.

The 60 x 100 foot mural, which weighs over 112 tons, depicts a brightly-colored "mythical dragon" rising up out of Birmingham's industrial past.

The first sections of the mural were installed in 1996 as part of the arts festivities surrounding the 1996 Olympics. (A soccer ball is visible in one of the panels). The mural was completed in Spring 2000.
