Blank Space Birmingham
Blank Space Mural Project is a group founded in 2015 to create artistic murals for buildings in downtown Birmingham.
It was begun by real estate developer Kyle Kruse with his wife Stephanie Guckenberger and Meghan McCollum. Kruse had an idea for a pop art-style mural depicting Vulcan in bright colors on the side of the Lichter's Building, which he owned, at 1818 3rd Avenue North.
Kruse followed that project with a more ambitious idea for the side of the adjacent Whitmire Lofts building, which he also owned. This time he collaborated with artist Andy Jordan to develop a design similar to the Vulcan mural but depicting performing artists in an overall composition alluding to color television test patterns. The idea was to convey a sense of the arts "coming into focus" with the completion of the renovations at the nearby Lyric Theatre contributing to the city's theater district.
