Center Point High School is a four-year public high school in the Birmingham suburb of Center Point 105 Eagle Drive as part of Jefferson County Schools. School colors are red, white, and blue and the athletic teams are called the "Eagles". Opening in 2011, this was constructed as a replacement facility for the former Erwin High School.
History
Representatives from the Jefferson County Board of Education showed the Center Point City Council preliminary plans for a new high school on May 22, 2008. At this meeting, renderings for the facility under the designs of Evan Terry & Associates were unveiled as Center Point High School at the request of mayor Tom Henderson and the city council. It was also noted that public input, including that for a proposed name change from Erwin, would be taken from Center Point residents, city officials and other interested individuals and groups.
On May 6, 2010, the school board officially voted to change the name of the new facility from E.B. Erwin High School to Center Point High School. Upon opening, the former high school became Erwin Middle School. A ceremonial groundbreaking for the facility was held later that month with construction scheduled for completion for the beginning of the 2011 school year.
Construction for the $32.6 million facility was financed from the one cent county sales tax for education. Its site is located on 88 acres across Jefferson State Parkway from Jefferson State Community College. The facility was designed to accommodate 1,200 students in about 264,000 square feet. Additionally, a new football stadium, competition gymnasium, baseball and softball fields, fine arts center, computer labs and auditorium with seating for 650 were also constructed as part of the project.
Athletics
Center Point High School's (formerly Erwin High School) athletics programs compete in AHSAA Class 5A, Region 5. As Erwin, the school produced state championships in wrestling in 1992 and 1999 and the varsity football team won regional championships in 1980, 1988, 1989, 1995, 1996, and 1997.
