He played for Texans SC Houston in 2016 and joined the FC Dallas Academy in 2017. He was signed by FC Dallas in April 2018 and invited by his new team to try out with FC Bayern München in May. On July 7, 2022 he signed a 5-year contract with Crystal Palace FC. He made his debut in the Premier League by coming in at the 79th minute of a 1-1 draw against Liverpool.

Richards debuted for the U.S. Men's Under 20 team in May 2018 and was on the roster for the 2018 CONCACAF U-20 Championship and started in two matches. In the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup, Richards started all five matches and played four complete games, including a surprise defeat of France.
