David T. McKinney (born in Alexander City) is a speech professor at Jefferson State Community College and a candidate for Birmingham Board of Education District 5 in the 2017 Birmingham municipal election.

McKinney earned a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism at Troy University, a master's in communication management at UAB, and an Educational Specialist degree in instructional technology at the University of Alabama in 2014. He is currently working toward a Ph.D. in educational leadership.

He worked as a production assistant for WBRC-TV from 2006 to 2009 and began his teaching career at Miles College in 2008.
