Davis Washington Austin (born May 1827 in Butler County; died May 13, 1903 in Birmingham) was a jailor for Jefferson County, and also accused of being one of the leaders of a mob which stormed the jail in December 1883 in order to lynch Wesley Posey.
Austin was the son of Davis and Eleanor Hill Austin. He served with Company G of the 17th Regiment of Alabama Infantry stationed to the U.S. Naval Yard in Escambia County, Florida.
He married the former Amanda Seale and had five children, Mary, Conrad, and Anna. The family resided on the jail property at the corner of 4th Avenue North and 21st Street. In 1884 Austin's brothers Conrad and William resided with him.
