Derrill Crowe
Aubrey Derrill Crowe (born c. 1937 in Troy, Pike County) is a urologist and the the founder and chairman of ProAssurance, a provider of medical liability insurance.
Crowe graduated from Troy High School in 1955 and earned his undergraduate degree at Howard College and continued with medical studies at the University of Alabama Medical College. He completed his internship and surgical residency at Lloyd Noland Hospital and a residency in urology at UAB Hospital.
As a practicing urologist, Crowe helped establish Alabama's first freestanding physician-owned outpatient surgery center, where he pioneered outpatient treatment for kidney stones. He established the Alabama Renal Stone Institute at Brookwood Medical Center, which operated the state's first lithotriper.
Crowe founded the Mutual Assurance Society of Alabama in 1976, which was known as the Medical Assurance Company when it combined with the Professionals Group, Inc. in 2001, forming ProAssurance with Crowe as Chief Executive Officer. He was named Alabama CEO of the Year by the Birmingham News in 2005. Stan Starnes, the company's former legal counsel, succeeded Crowe after his retirement in 2007. He remains Chairman of the Board for the company.
In 2008 Crowe was inducted into the Alabama Business Hall of Fame and the Alabama Healthcare Hall of Fame.
Crowe and his first wife, Mary Catherine, had three children. He and his current wife, Cameron, have four children. Crowe built a massive residence in Mountain Brook, which was completed in 2007.
