Dixie Field was Birmingham's first airport located just east of Elmwood Cemetery at the present location of Loveman Village. The airfield opened in 1919 under the guidance of Virgil Evans, the state adjutant general during World War I, with Glenn Messer running daily operations. This facility would be replaced with Roberts Field in 1922 as the primary Birmingham airfield.
