J. B. Gibson Elementary School is an elementary school in the Birmingham City Schools system located at 956 50th Street North overlooking Messer Airport Highway in Woodlawn. The school was established prior to 1910 by the then-independent City of Woodlawn.

1st Gibson School

The first building was a two-story brick-clad building with arched upper windows and ornate gable dormers located at 5016 2nd Avenue North. The school was absorbed into Birmingham as part of the Greater Birmingham annexation which took effect in January 1910.

The current school building was constructed at 956 50th Street North in 1926 with an addition completed two years later. It was named for former Birmingham Board of Education member J. B. Gibson, who donated the site.

Under the most recent school consolidation plan proposed by acting superintendent Barbara Allen and approved by the Board, Gibson Elementary would close in the Summer of 2010 with students transferring to a new K-8 school at the site of the present Hayes High School. [1]
