Grassroots Coalition of Birmingham

The Grassroots Coalition of Birmingham is a community organization established in 2017 to promote informed participation in the 2017 Birmingham municipal election, to pursue transparent and representative government, and to empower local residents.

In April 2017 the coalition hosted a forum for mayoral candidates at Avondale Brewing Company. In June the group issued a "Black Agenda" platform for city government, which included calls to address poverty, to reform policing and criminal justice, to build wealth in the black community, to make government more accountable, to improve education, and to expand affordable housing and access to health care.

In July, the Grassroots Coalition endorsed Randall Woodfin for Mayor of Birmingham, and also endorsed six candidates in five of nine Birmingham City Council races. The group endorsed Stephen L. Murphy, Cory Pettway, Sergio Williams, Lonnie Malone, Adlai Trone and Eric Hall.
