Inverness is a residential, office and retail development constructed in the 1970s on 1,500 acres of land adjacent to U. S. Highway 280 between Valleydale Road and the Cahaba River. The Inverness Country Club, with an 18-hole golf course, opened in 1973 on Lake Heather.

The residential development, consisting initially of apartments, condominiums, townhomes and detached houses, was marketed by Barbara Lord and Associates.

The Inverness Center office park occupies the northern edge of the development.

Locally, and unofficially, the areas directly off U. S. 280 from roughly the I-459 interchange eastward to The Narrows are referred to as "Inverness" and includes areas in the city limits of Birmingham and Hoover as well as unincorporated Jefferson and Shelby Counties.
