Kenya Marshall
Kenya Lavender Marshall (born April 7, 1975 in Birmingham) is an attorney and unopposed candidate for Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge, Place 17 in the 2010 general election.
Marshall, the granddaughter of Simmie Lavender, attended public schools in Birmingham, graduating from Wenonah High School. She earned her bachelor's degree in English and political science at the University of Alabama and her juris doctorate at the Southern University Law Center. She married Marvin Marshall in 1999 and has one son. They live in Gardendale and attend Faith Chapel Christian Center.
Her solo practice, the Marshall Law Firm, LLC, specializes in personal injury and family law cases.
Marshall won 42% of the primary votes and defeated incumbent appointee Nikki Still in the runoff of the 2010 primary elections. After the runoff, she was accused of spending $30,000 from a client's trust account to cover personal expenses. She was suspended from practice by the Alabama State Bar's disciplinary committee pending a formal hearing. If she does not regain her license, she will not be qualified to be seated as a judge. The Alabama Democratic Party may select another nominee if necessary.
