Lewis Butt Mayer (formerly Lewis Butt Barrett) was briefly the owner and publisher of the Birmingham Age-Herald, which she took over at the death of her husband, Edward Barrett. She sold the newspaper to Mobile Register and Mobile News-Item publisher Frederick Thompson in 1922 and married hotel executive Robert Mayer that November.
