Lion & Unicorn was a store that sold books (primarily science fiction and fantasy), comic books, role-playing games (RPGs), and war games in the Birmingham and Hoover areas. The original store was founded by husband and wife team Allen and Susan Hammack in the mid-1980's at 1915 11th Avenue South in Five Points South. At the time, Allen Hammack had most recently been an employee of TSR, publishers of the Dungeons & Dragons RPG. The store later moved a short distance into Pickwick Plaza and put a greater emphasis on games and comics and less emphasis on books.

In 1992, the Hammacks sold the store to their son-in-law, Hunter Godfrey. A second, larger "super store" was opened in Hoover Commons at 1615 Montgomery Highway in Hoover around that time. It was completely dedicated to comic books and games. The store also started an official computer bulletin board system, the Lion & Unicorn BBS.

As the bottom fell out of the comic book market, the original store in Five Points closed and the Hoover store moved to 3321 Lorna Road in the Delchamps Shopping Center at Rocky Ridge Road. It later moved to a newer, smaller commercial development at 2159 Rocky Ridge Road, just behind the Delchamps Shopping Center, before finally closing for good.
