Llandovacaste birminghamensis is a fossil trilobite, the only examples of which have been found in Red Mountain. The first type specimen was removed from the cut by paleontologists working for the Red Mountain Museum. These specimens are preserved for research at the McWane Science Center downtown. The genus Llandovacaste is found only in the southeastern US and in western Europe, and is therefore an important piece of fossil evidence for continental drift.

A drawing of the Llandovacaste birminghamensis serves as part of the logo for the Birmingham Paleontological Society.

On February 18, 1978 Llandovacaste birminghamensis was honored with a special commemorative postmark on the occasion of the Alapex stamp-collectors' expo sponsored by the Birmingham Philatelic Society.
