Luti is named for the Swazi word "lútsândvo", meaning "love". He was the second elephant born to his mother, Ndula, and the 14th sired by his father, Mabu. Both of his parents were born wild in Southern Africa. He was the first calf born at San Diego's main elephant yard with the rest of the herd present. He weighed 224 pounds at birth.
