Mike Hale (born 1951) is the Sheriff of Jefferson County. He first took office in 1999 following a seeming victory in the 1998 election, but was replaced by Jim Woodward after a recount. In the 2002 election he won an outright victory against Woodward. He won re-election again, this time over Ron McGuffie in the 2006 election.
Early life and career
Hale grew up in Woodlawn and graduated in 1969 from Woodlawn High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from UAB in 1987.
He started his law enforcement career with the Homewood Police Department in 1973. In 1976 he transferred to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, where he has spent his career having commanded, at various times, every division of the department. He was also the Chief of Police for Pell City (2000-2002) and the director of security for St Vincent's Hospital in Birmingham.

During his term as sheriff, Hale has initiated several popular and visible enforcement programs such as the Citizen's Training Academy and the Cell Phone Posse to involve more private citizens in crime investigation efforts.
As Sheriff, Hale sits on the boards of the Alabama Sheriff's Youth Ranches and the Department of Youth Services Vacca Campus for juvenile offenders. He also serves on the boards of the United Way of Central Alabama and the Greater Alabama Boy Scout Council.
Hale has been married since 1971 to the former Dianna Gilmore. The couple have three sons and six grandchildren. They are residents of the Clay-Trussville area and attend the Church at Brook Hills. He is a member of the B.P.O. Elks, Lodge #79 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 972, a Master Mason, Scottish Rite, Eastern Star, and Shrine.
