Owner E. C. Phipps, a Navy veteran, relocated the business from Duluth, Minnesota, and closed another store in Eau Claire, Wisconsin for the opportunity to move to the South. He brought five families of associates with him. The Birmingham store opened on Monday April 16, 1956.
