Tom Woods
Thomas W. Woods Jr (born in Plainville, Georgia) was a grocery store manager and member of the Birmingham City Council from 1963 to 1965 and from 1967 to 1971.
Woods moved to Birmingham in 1923. He worked as manager of the Woodlawn Hill's Supermarket beginning in 1940, and served as president of the Woodlawn Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the Jefferson County Judicial Commission, the Jefferson County Area Development Commission, and the Mayor's Action Committee.
Woods was also a president of the Woodlawn Lions Club, a member of the Crestwood Civic Club, a member of the board of managers for the YMCA Northeast Branch and the boards of trustees for Woodlawn Methodist Church and the Alabama State Training School for Girls. In 1963 he resided at 837 59th Street South in Crestwood.
In the 1963 Birmingham City Council election, Woods won a two-year at-large term on the first City Council, which served briefly alongside the outgoing Birmingham City Commission while the change in government was being challenged in the courts.
Woods was not re-elected in the 1965 Birmingham City Council election, but did run for re-election in 1967 Birmingham municipal election, winning a four-year term. He was not returned to the council in the 1971 election.
Woods and his wife, the former Elizabeth Moxley, had two children.
