USS Real Estate is the development division of U. S. Steel, and the largest single land-owner in Jefferson County. Before the 1980s, the division was primarily involved in managing industrial tracts, but has, since then, taken an active role in residential and mixed-use development. The head of southeast development, based in Birmingham, is Tom Howard.
