R. L. Zeigler Co., Inc. (or Zeigler Meats) is a Tuscaloosa-based meat processor. It is the largest privately owned meat packing company in the Southeast.
The company was founded in 1927 after R. L. Zeigler outgrew his facilities making pork sausage in his supermarket and opened a meat packing plant in Bessemer. During the 1930s the company sponsored a "Three Little Pigs" vocal trio on WAPI-AM.
After Zeigler died in 1964, the company was purchased in 1967 by Tuscaloosa businessmen James Hinton, Frank Moody, and Paul "Bear" Bryant.
Today, the company's headquarters are in Tuscaloosa and meat packing plants are located there and in Selma. Hinton remains CEO and the company's president is W. Lackey Stephens.
