Aldi

Aldi is a German chain of discount grocery stores that entered the Birmingham market with the opening of its Bessemer store on Academy Drive in January 2007. The chain was founded in Essen, Germany in 1948, and saw its first U.S. store open in Iowa in 1976. The chain is noted for carrying a limited selection of various food and home products in addition to having innovative means to cut costs to the consumer such as charging for bags and having a refundable cart rental charge of 25¢.
