Summit Cinemas
The Summit Cinemas, also called AMC Summit 16, formerly Carmike Movies at the Summit and Carmike Summit 16 is a 16-screen cinema multiplex which opened in 1997 as part of The Summit lifestyle shopping center near U.S. Highway 280 and I-459 in Birmingham's Overton neighborhood.
The cinema opened on November 14, 1997 with screenings of "Mad City", "The Man Who Knew Too Little", "Starship Troopers", "The Jackal", "Bean", "Switchback", "Eve's Bayou", "Red Corner", "Kiss the Girls", "Devil's Advocate", "I Know What You Did Last Summer", and "Fairy Tale: A True Story".
Summit Cinemas was originally operated by Carmike Cinemas of Columbus, Georgia, but was rebranded in 2017 after Carmike was acquired by AMC Entertainment of Leawood, Kansas.
The Summit 16 multiplex is notable for its spacious lobby with cafe-style seating and its expansive concession stand menu. Its theaters, which have always had stadium-style seating, range in capacity from 103 to 288 seats. The cinema opened with Dolby Digital, DTS, and THX sound. It is equipped with "RealD 3D" projectors.
A $5 million renovation project was carried out by Petrie Construction of Aberdeen, Maryland in 2023.
