Manchester Terrace

Manchester Terrace is an apartment complex surrounding a raised terrace with four shop fronts at street level, divided by a wide stairway. It is located on a sloping site at 720–228 29th Street South on Block 411 in Birmingham's Lakeview District.

The mixed-use complex was designed in contrasting styles. The brick and half-timbered gables of the apartment building are in an English vernacular style, while the stucco-clad shops with their barrel-tiled roof parapet and circular arched openings framed with spiral columns evoke Mediterranean architecture. The apartment building is divided into three hip-roofed sections, each containing four 1-bedroom units with a gabled entrance on the courtyard terrace.

The building was erected in 1927 by the Maloney Construction Company. The original complex included a 12-car garage on the alley behind the apartments. It was later demolished.

The development went through foreclosure in 1931 and was subsequently owned by the Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company. The shop fronts remained mostly vacant through the years of the Great Depression and remained difficult to lease due to poor maintenance. The Palace Theatre Company acquired the property in 1938, and sold it to T. W. Williams the following year.

Manchester Terrace was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.
