Brownell Travel is a luxury travel agency with offices at The Summit. It is credited as being the oldest professional travel agency in North America.
The company was founded in Tuscaloosa in 1887 when Walter Brownell organized a 10-person tour of archeological sites in Switzerland. His son, George, and daughter-in-law Jennie assumed management of the company in 1900. In 1931 George Jr assumed the title of president. The company was formally incorporated in Birmingham in 1946.
In 1989 the firm was bought by a group of investors. It merged with Destinations Travel in 1995 and opened a Mobile office in 2001. In 2004 the company merged with Sterling Travel of Atlanta, Georgia. It relocated its offices in the Brownell Travel building from 813 Shades Creek Parkway to The Summit in 2011.
