A campaign launched in September 2006 involved City Stages organizers partnering with Catalyst 4 Birmingham to raise $1 million to retire its debts and create a cushion for ongoing operations. Six major donors have pledged $600,000 so far, while about $150,000 has been raised in smaller increments by Catalyst. Another $300,000 for the next three years is sought from public sources.

In early June 2007, City Stages reported that it had cut it's overall debt by $795,000 to slightly more than $60,000 as it continues fund raising in the private sector. Public funding from Jefferson County Community Arts Fund was reduced by $15,000 while the city of Birmingham provided $50,000 in direct funding as well as a police security detail.
