Bennett Davis "Benny" Marshall (born November 6, 1919 in Vincent; died September 25, 1969 in Birmingham) was a sports columnist and editor for The Birmingham News, and seven-time winner of the Alabama Sportswriter of the Year award from the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.
Marshall graduated from Howard College. He began his career at the Birmingham Age-Herald in 1939. He replaced Zipp Newman as sports editor for the News in 1959.
Marshall suffered two heart attacks by age 44. He suffered from the after-effects, which were compounded by depression. Four years later, after being driven home by fellow writer Paul Hemphill, he killed himself with a shotgun at his house. He had four children, Phillip, David, Ellen and Matt.
Marshall was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 1982.
