Giles was a member of the [[1975]] 4-A Alabama State Title basketball team at [[Parker High School]] and graduated in [[1977]] as the City MVP and an All-Metro and All-Region player. As a [[UAB]] Blazer, he was part of the [[1981|1980-81]] team that finished 23-9 with an appearance in the NCAA Tournament "Sweet 16". He averaged 11 points and 7 rebounds for the team and was named to the Sun Belt's second all-conference team. In his senior season the Blazers finished 25-6 with an appearance in the "Elite Eight". He averaged 10 points and 7 rebounds per game and was named to the all-conference team, and the all-tournament team. He completed a bachelor of science in physical education at UAB and later earned a master's in physical education at Jackson State University.
