Monument on July 30, 2007

The Eternal Flame of Freedom is a monument in Linn Park. Located in the southwest corner of the park near the Park Place and Short 20th Street intersection, the granite monument was dedicated on March 15, 1969 by the local American Legion posts. It originally featured a gas flame, and honors the memory of Jefferson County veterans.

On February 13, 2008, UAB student and Iraq War veteran Michael Rudulph began a vigil to get the flame relit. Neither the city of Birmingham or Jefferson County claimed ownership of the monument, which had been flameless for years.
