The Gardendale Police Department consists of approximately 30 full-time employees plus another 29 part-time employees.  The full-time employees include the Chief, patrol officers, two bicycle patrol officers, two investigators, and six dispatchers.  The part-time employees include eight school crossing guards, eight reserve officers, and 13 Police Explorers.  The latter is made up of 14-to-20-year-old youths and is affiliated  with the Boy Scouts of America. The Gardendale Police Department serves the City of Gardendale, north of Birmingham, with a population of nearly 14,000. Since 2007 the department moved from Gardendale City Hall to a new Gardendale Police Headquarters in the former Food-World location at 1309 Decatur Highway. The Chief of Police is Mike Walker.
