The Gardendale Police Department serves the City of Gardendale, north of Birmingham, with a population of nearly 14,000. Since 2007 the department moved from Gardendale City Hall to a new Gardendale Police Headquarters in the former Food-World location at 1309 Decatur Highway. The Chief of Police is Mike Walker.

As of 2007, the Gardendale Police Department consisted of approximately 30 full-time employees plus another 29 part-time employees. The full-time employees include the Chief, patrol officers, two bicycle patrol officers, two investigators, and six dispatchers. The part-time employees include eight school crossing guards, eight reserve officers, and 13 Police Explorers. The latter is made up of 14-to-20-year-old youths and is affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America.

History

An ordinance was adopted establishing a police department for the city on July 7, 1955. Being a new city the first police chief used his own automobile for patrolling until the council leased a car for a few months and on November 3, 1955 the city purchased the first police car at a cost of $1,617.00.
