The USS Hephaestus (NCC-2004) is the Birmingham area chapter, part of Region 2 of STARFLEET: The International Star Trek Fan Association, an organization of fans of the "Star Trek" media franchise. As a non-profit organization, STARFLEET encourages members to take part in charitable fund-raising activities and other public services. The chapter's current commanding officer is MarkAdam Miller.
Each chapter of STARFLEET takes on the name of a fictional starship, space station, or other vessel in the Star Trek universe. The Hephaestus chapter is named for the Greek god of the forge, known to the Romans as Vulcan. The Birmingham chapter was organized on September 10, 1988, and commissioned by SFI on October 24, 1989.
