United Steelworkers of America (USW) is a national union of steel workers affiliated with the AFL-CIO and headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The union was founded in 1942.

Its District 9, which includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and the U. S. Virgin Islands is headquartered at 919 Sharit Avenue in Gardendale. Sub-District 4, which covers central-Alabama, shares the same offices. Daniel Flippo is District Director.

The status of the union in the Birmingham District has been deeply threatened after the decision by U.S. Steel to shut down the last of its blast furnaces at Fairfield Works and by the bankruptcy filing of Walter Energy.
